How To Keep The Pounds Off During The Holidays

The holidays are the best time of the year. We get to spend time with family and friends, reflect on how thankful and blessed we are and eat delicious yummy comfort foods that we don’t usually eat. During this awesome time of the year our nutrition and fitness regime suffers unfortunately. We spend less time in the gym because we are going in and out of town and indulging a little too much at times. For some people this is discouraging and for others it’s like “Whatever I’ll just restart next year”.

I want to to talk about this whole “Next Year” mentality. So I only have a few words for it…

It seems like there is a yearly cycle.

In the beginning of the year we go hard on our New Year’s resolutions which more than likely includes a health resolution.

By the summer we are burnt out and over our goals.

By Fall we try to hop back on board and do well for awhile until November hits.

November & December we say screw it and have no self control, eat whatever we want as much as we want and skip the gym because it’s too cold out or because it’s dark or some other excuse ( I mean that’s just what they are).

January comes around again and the cycle starts back over.

This cycle must end! We do not need to throw all our hard work away at the end of the year and restart over and over it’s literally insanity! Doing the same thing over and over with no true change or result.

It’s the best time of the year to stay healthy and work harder to accomplish your health and wellness goals. Today I want to give you some helpful tips on how not to GAIN during the holiday season so that your not starting all the way over in January!

#1 Food Swaps. What if I told you that you can make your favorite holiday comfort food and not feel guilty on eating it? Sounds amazing but sorta impossible, but it’s totally possible by swapping out ingredients or methods of cooking. As a Certified Health Coach I teach my client how to swap out ingredients to make their favorite dishes healthier. Or how to change their cooking method so that the meal is healthier. My favorite example is how I make the most BOMB “fried chicken”. I batter my chicken with whole wheat flour instead of white flour and I bake it in the oven instead of frying it. It’s freaking delicious and crispy just like the fried version. Plus it saves me a ton of calories and fat.


#2 Mindfulness. Be mindful of what and how much your eating during the holiday season. Don’t go overboard, especially if you've been doing great on your nutrition all year. Trust me I have made that mistake and paid for it by becoming extremely sick from eating too much sugary foods when I normally don’t do so.

#3 Stay Active. Don’t make those excuses of how cold it is out, it’s dark earlier, or I’m too busy to prevent you from staying active. Everyone has 10 minutes in their day to be active. YES even if it’s only 10 mins STAY ACTIVE everyday, your body will thank you for it!

#4 DRINK WATER. It can be so tempting to drink those cocktails and sodas during the holiday season but amp up the water intake even more than you usually do. I know this one is a struggle for me because I’m really social during the holiday season, hosting parties and around those delish speciality cocktails. To make sure I’m on track with my water intake and don't indulge in the overload of sugar that is in most cocktails, I amp up my water intake.

#5 Keep It Proportional. You do not have to fill up your plate or go for 3rds!!!!! During your holiday dinners focus on the proportions of your meal. Proportion is key even when your eating healthier foods. Too much of a good thing can still be bad for your health! So keep it proportional and listen to your body to determine if your even hungry and need to go back for a second plate. Chances are your already full and can skip out on the extra plate of food!
