How Lifting Heavy Weights Changed My Perspective
Many women don’t lift heavy weights. We’ll lift only a certain amount of weight in the gym, but never push ourselves to see just how much we can back squat. I used to be that woman. Of course I lifted weights but I never REALLY lifted weights! I would only go up so far and if it was a challenge I would stop at that weight and trust me I never got past anything that was super heavy!
Recently I completed a weight lifting program for 6 weeks and it was a GAME CHANGER for me! I learned so much about myself, my ability to lift, my physical strength, and my over all girl power and how I was underutilizing and just playing it too safe.
So I know all about excuses. I used to be the EXCUSE QUEEN when it came to why I didn’t lift over a certain amount of weight in the gym. And it was never because I was afraid of looking like a man! In case you never knew, I have type II arthritis in my right knee and type I in my left knee. It can be very PAINFUL at times and make it difficult for me to even do bodyweight squats sometimes. I promised myself though that during this 6 week program that I wouldn’t allow any excuses to hold me back. I mean it’s just a lil joint pain right? Throughout the 6 week program training, I literally told myself, if I can push out a 9 lb baby with no meds, I can DEFINITELY do this!
Ok, so during my 6 week weightlifting program I had to max out on the pajor lifts: back squat, overhead press, deadlift, and chest press. Even though I had never done any of it before, I was determined to increase my maxes every week and that's just what I did! I went from back squatting the bar to almost 200lbs!! Also, on my weakest lift- the chest press, I went from barely being able to press the bar to over 100lbs!!
What helped me accomplish these major gains?
First of all, I let go of my excuses because they were holding me back MAJOR time!
Second, the empowerment I received from going up in weight was AMAZING and gave me that YOU CAN DO IT factor and I DID IT ALL BY MYSELF *insert Little Mix song here*
Last but not least, learning the correct form helped me tremendously throughout my training! YAAASSS, this is everything ya’ll! If your form is correct and spot on, you’ll be able to lift heavy and NOT suffer from pains! TRUST ME!
I hope this is all inspiring to any woman who is out there looking to push themselves and see how strong they really are, because believe me honey! You can move mountains and you are stronger than you can ever believe.
